No Worries

In my last post, I mentioned the famous friendliness of the Australians. My favorite part of interacting with people at the store, restaurants, banks, or just asking for directions on the sidewalk, is the phrases that they use to tell you that they heard you and will respond appropriately.

I love them because, if taken literally, they seem to imply that you've asked for something quite difficult, but that will in no way inconvenience your willing compatriot.

The most popular phrase in the lexicon is "No worries" (i.e. - "Can I get a Diet Coke?" "No worries!") I hear "no worries" at least 50 times per day. It does begin to give one the sense that there is little to be worked up about. It's the perfect expression of the easygoing Aussies.

Variations include

-No drama
-No stress
-and my new favorite, too easy

The last time we were in a restaurant, this exact conversation took place between us and the smiling, shaggy-haired, young blond waiter:

"I'll have the chicken plate."
"Too easy. Would you like salad or chips with that?"
"Salad."
"Too easy. Would you like any sauce with that?"
"Oh, thanks. I'll have the mushroom sauce."
"Too easy."
"Also, we have a bottle of wine that we're going to have with dinner."
"Too easy!"

(Add second diner and repeat).

He did get everything right, so I guess it really was too easy.

  2. Since I first read this, I've found myself using the phrase "too easy." Am I really that impressionable? Guess so. Miss you both terribly!
