Equinox: First Roof Day

I can't lie, Northern Hemisphere, I was feeling pretty jealous of your Super Harvest Moon. Whatever a Super Harvest Moon even is, it sounds pretty wonderful and beautifully Fall-y.

I've been told by expats that this time of year is the hardest to adjust to. It is September, and my pysche thinks that we should be putting on sweaters, looking for pumpkins, and tossing cinnamon sticks into cider. Instead, we are heading squarely into spring (this will be either my 7th or 8th season this calendar year, so I'm suitably confused).

Right on time for the equinox, the weather turned beautiful today. We've had a couple of nice days scattered over the past few weeks, and today it feels like Spring may be here to stay. As I walked home from my morning meeting, I realized that I'd rather overdressed in a long-sleeve t-shirt and boots; so, I came home, changed into something springier, packed up our new picnic basket with a book, nail polish, and a bottle of Riesling and headed to my favorite place in town ... our roof.

From the roof, we see this:

There are picnic tables all over the roof, and for some reason, my neighbors seem to vastly under utilize the space. It is particularly strange to have almost no company when you consider this:

Oh, yes - we have a rooftop pool.

Perhaps we're not quite to swimming season, yet; but I did enjoy my afternoon of leisure on the roof, sipping my wine, reading plays, painting my nails ...

I eventually came inside to make a Fiesta dip to bring to a party at Partner-in-Crime's boss's apartment tonight (and when I say apartment, I mean the roof of her apartment. More roof!). The Australians know not about good Tex Mex, so I'm fully expecting this dish to be a hit.

Welcome, spring, and all the roof-hanging-out-goodness that you bring with you. You may not have pumpkins, but I think you and I are going to get along just fine.

  1. I tell you what - the fact that is is fall back home has really got me homesick! I LOVE fall and Halloween!!! I want to have some apple cider and carve a pumpkin and watch endless Disney channel Halloween movies.

PS. Your dip looks wonderful... I wouldn't mind having the recipe!

PPSS. What a rough life... look at that view from the roof! Awesome!

  2. I think Halloween is going to be really weird, especially since I've heard that they don't really celebrate it here. How sad for the kids - best holiday ever!

Here's the link to the dip recipe. It was a HUGE hit at the party!
