I'm always singing Dar Williams' "February" in my head during this month, though its story about the crushing toll of a long winter - literally and metaphorically - is not applicable here in Australia. In fact, the weather of late has been so pleasant that we're not even having a soul crushing summer.
The line that always plays in my head is, "February was so long that it lasted into March" (forgive me, I've quoted that here before). This February may actually feel that long by the end, as we've officially begun the expat blog challenge. No complaints from me, however, as I did devise the whole idea.
In fact today, Day One, will likely prove my toughest day of blogging because it just so happened to fall on the same day as Hushpuppy's first birthday party. Though a casual affair, it was still one I have been throwing every ounce of excess energy into for the last month, ending in a buzzing hive of last minute cake baking, sandwich making, fruit cutting, and general gettin' together over the last 48 hours.
The effect of the party on my home, however, has been rather less festive. And so it is that I tell you the whole truth when I tackle today's prompt, "the view from where I write."
Letting my toddler do a lot of wandering around the house over the last two days (supervised, but distractedly), she's wreaked a fair bit of havoc. A greatly preferred havoc-wreaking spot happens to be our bookshelf, from which she enjoys pulling down travel guides, religious texts, biographies, humor books, and literary masterpieces with little discrimination. I caught her yesterday turning my Complete Works of Shakespeare into an abridged version. So, to my immediate right, this is the view from where I write.
On the other side of the room, mocking me, are the party leftovers that beg to be put away. Wine, soda, beer. Boxes of leftover cookies, plastic plates, forks, and napkins. Scraps of colored paper, tape, glue and all the evidence of my insatiable Pinterest addiction. I laugh right back at this blemish on my home. Not tonight, you wretch!
Head foggy, feet sore, and covered in a thin layer of buttercream frosting, this is the view from where I write. This is the only view that matters to me this evening, as we leap into February, ready or not.
congrats on the special occasion, little ones are one of the great delights of life
ReplyDeleteThanks! I must agree. She's worth the mess. :-)
DeleteHappy birthday, Hushpuppy! I cannot believe that she is already a year old. I remember the posts from when she was born. OMG! I'm so glad to see (from a lot of posts today) that I'm not the only one with a well-lived-in apartment/home. Thank you for putting together this challenge... I know it's only day one, but I'm really enjoying it in my unemployment.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe it, either!
DeleteLol. Love it. Your addiction to Pinterest has clearly paid off. Hushpuppy's party was a hit. Your view looks perfect...sun setting...glass of wine - what more could a girl ask for?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sam! I did have a lot of fun putting it all together. So very nice to have everyone there today.
DeleteLooks like a well deserved food prop and glass of white!!! Enjoy and happy bday to bubs!
ReplyDelete1. Every mom's house looks like that, birthday party or not.
ReplyDelete2. Happy Birthday little one!!!!
3. I love the view from where you write- what am I looking at?
4. I super love that you have on slippers- I hate feet pictures :)
5. I'm going to drink wine tonight, in honor of your LO's special day! Mostly...
1. Ugh. The books make me the craziest.
Delete2. Thanks!!
3. I'm looking out onto our back patio. Hushpuppy's playhouse, potted palms, and then onto a very glamorous parking lot.
4. :-) Leah gave me those for Christmas probably a decade ago!
5. Good call. I'm happy to return the favor any time.
In that second photo, it looks like you're behind bars and looking to bust out, hehehe. How do you get your slippers to last so long? I go through mine in a few months.
ReplyDeleteHa, yeah, that's Hushpuppy's playpen. I would like to keep her "behind bars" a lot more, but she can push it all over the house now, so there's increasingly little point. :-)
DeleteThe slippers - funny actually, I've had them all this time, but rarely wore them. However, our new place is almost all tile and almost no carpet, so they've found new life.
