Day Zero Redux

Still basking in the glow of the the Expat Blog Party - I mean Challenge - and three yoga practices down (28 to go) in my next challenge, this seems like an apt time to talk goals.

Those of you who have been reading this site for awhile know that I completed my first Day Zero Project in April 2013. Basically, Day Zero is a list of 101 things to do in 1001 days. It's a place to track goals and wishes, and I like the time limit because it pushes you to just do some of those things that you always put off. When I say that I "completed" the project, the truth is that I only got through 55 of my 101 things. I was fine with that because, by the end of almost three years, there were some that I just didn't care about anymore, and others that simply didn't fit into my life. Still, the ones I did complete seemed like a an accomplishment.

It didn't take me long to get to work on a new list, and I actually started it in July 2013, so this round is set to complete in April 2016. Try as I might, I have only come up with 52 goals this time. At first, I was kind of bummed - have I lost my ambition since having a baby? But, the more I thought about it, I realized that with a baby - and perhaps even another one some day in the next few years - I have to be more discriminating and realistic about my time and resources. There are travel goals on this list, but not as many as on the previous list because I know we're just not going to be taking as many trips. That's reality. And, frankly, I don't have as much time to read, or watch movies, or do hobbies as I did, so better make the goals I set count.

I still reserve the right to continue to add (I mean, who's going to stop me?), but right now, the list looks like this (with a couple of the goals even completed - huzzah!).

  1. I super love this list!! Really- I love everything about it. I want to 'borrow' some of these and make my own list. Hmmm... project for after the big birthday weekend :) I really love the idea of setting aside money for Kickstarter and Kiva loans- absolutely great idea. And getting Christmas stockings made has been high on my list for years now...

    1. Do it! I like that it's almost 3 years, so you can really think longer terms, plus gives you a push to get some of those "I'll get to it one day" projects (Christmas stockings!).
I did the Kiva loans with the money I saved from the last project, plus got a gift card to make two more, and I've already had $50 repaid and turned them back into more loans. It's great!

  2. I love this idea. You have such great ideas on there, although half are way too adventurous. I'm going to get thinking on my own. Thanks for planting the seed!

    1. Here's the link to the site. http://dayzeroproject.com/ It's a lot of fun! I think the key is to be ambitious, but also realistic about who you are and what you're truly likely to achieve. No need to get crazy with a list that's just setting you up for failure.

  3. I love your list! A lot of what I see - I'm like, oh yes, me too - I should do that! Lol. I would love to do an American road trip ---> I keep trying to talk my other half into making it a priority dream for him too! Lol. PS I have grown a tomato plant - now I feel accomplished. I think I should make one of these lists for myself too!

    1. Ugh - I grew 2 tomato plants this summer, and they yielded a total of 3 cherry tomatoes. Total bust. I don't think I can check it off.
The National Park road trip has been a dream of ours for years now. We put all of our "extra" money - change jar, etc into the travel fund.
      http://dayzeroproject.com/ - do it!
